Companions

The corn has made great stakes for the beans to grow up and the nearby cucumbers are on the climb too.

I planted them at the same time and it seems to work well. The beans and corn are both healthy and happy. Nut the cucumbers are starting to pull the corn over. Harvesting is also a bit harder because there is a lot going on.

Planting out lettuce

I planted out some oak leaf and mignonette lettuce today. They should be ready to start picking leaves off in a  month or two. With the warm weather, I planted them throughout the garden in amongst broccoli, amaranth, petunias and marigolds where they were watered in with a weak seaweed mix.

They like a ph of about 6.5 and taste best when grown quickly with lots of water.

Tomatoes

This year I was a little late with the tomatoes and I have been trialling varieties that deal with all the pests including fruit fly. Last year even my cherry tomatoes got fruit fly. This year I tried burwood prize and daydream. I also have some Thai pink eggs in and a black russian, both of which are still coming on. The burwood prize has been amazing giving is steady supply of very yummy tomatoes that have had little problems with pests. They are planted in amongst basil, marigolds, petunias, amaranth, spring onions and nasturtiums. The daydreams are doing ok but they must be too tasty and I either need to pick them not quite ripe or cut the munch holes out. Super yummy though. I got the seeds from the lost seed in Tassy.
